Hello Patricia,

Thanks for your message. Depending on whether you pronounce your name Patri-sha (1) or Patri-sееya (2), your name would be written in Bulgarian as follows:

(1) Патриша Ло
(2) Патрисия Ло

Hope that helps. Wouldn't translate your surname to the Bulgarian word for Law as that would be just ...wrong...In fact most surnames usually do not get translated from one language to another, even though that could technically be done.

For example, a Bulgarian whose surname is Kovachev would not translate his name Smith, even though that's what the origins and meaning of the name Kovachev are. The same is valid the other way round.

Good luck,

I usually sign informal correspondence with just my first and middle name. I know how to spell my first name (Джесика), but I'm not sure how I would spell Anne (pronounced Ann) in Bulgarian. I know that they usually avoid double consonants, and that I would drop the e since it's silent anyways, so would it just be Ан?

And I'd also like some help translating my surname. I have no idea how you would spell Wyant (pronounced WHY-ant) in Bulgarian, especially since the Cryllic alphabet doesn't seem to be a direct equivalent of the English W. Confused

Thanks!

Hello Jessica,

Thanks for your message. Yes, you are right about your first names:

Джесика Ан is correct.

Just to illustrate the difference between having two n's in a name - you can have both Ана and Анна. The first one you would pronounce as Ah-nah, the second one would be An-nah. So if there's double 'n' in the name, you'd attempt to pronounce. That's why there's no point in putting two 'n' at the end of your name.

As for your surname: Whyant - it can be written as either Уайънт or Уайант, whichever you prefer.

As for the letter W - yes, there's no direct equivalent letter but the sound can be recreated using other letters. Just like there's no I and J in Bulgarian but you can write them down as АЙ and ДЖ.

Hope that helps.

take care,

Shouldn't it be "УаЯнт", not "УаЙАнт"? I'm not quite sure, because the name "Yaxley" form the seventh book about Harry Potter was translated in Bulgarian as "Йаксли", not "Яксли". But I still find the combination "Йа" somewhat strange.

"йа" equals "я", i.e. we have to write "я".
